April 2026 Newsletter

Helping seniors protect, plan, and move with confidence.

Issue #016 · April 2026

Hello friends,

April always feels like a fresh start to me. Tax season is wrapping up, the weather is warming, and there’s a sense that it’s time to stop putting things off and start taking action.

That’s the spirit behind this month’s newsletter. The common thread is strength and safety — protecting your health, protecting your heart, and protecting your personal information. Whether it’s learning to bounce back from life’s challenges, understanding the warning signs of a stroke, or spotting a romance scam before it costs you, every topic this month is about helping you stay one step ahead.

We also have two events you won’t want to miss: our May Financial Seminar and a free community shredding event right here in Orange County.

Warmly,
Mike Flahaven

This Month's Must-Reads

Three articles worth your time

Romance scams are on the rise - know the red flags

Romance scammers build trust first, then create a crisis. Watch for rushed emotional intimacy, requests for money, gift cards or crypto, secrecy, and excuses to avoid meeting in person.

  • They move the relationship forward very quickly.
  • They claim to work overseas - military, oil rigs, doctors abroad.
  • They encourage secrecy and avoid real-world connection.

Seven steps to staying resilient

Carol Morgan Milberger’s piece is practical and encouraging: take action, seek support, stay connected, preserve hope, maintain humor, do hard things, and build strength and stamina.

Major organizations update guidelines for stroke prevention

Every year more than 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke. This article breaks down what changed and reminds readers to remember BEFAST: Balance, Eyes, Face, Arm, Speech, Time.

Ask Mike

“What does it actually take to age in place safely?”

This is the number one question I get - and it’s the right one. Aging in place is absolutely possible for many people, but it takes a plan.

1. Home safety modifications

Start with grab bars, better lighting, non-slip flooring, and removing trip hazards. Small changes can prevent the falls that trigger bigger problems.

2. Care coordination & in-home help

Meals, medication management, transportation, companionship - knowing your options before a crisis gives you the power to choose.

3. Financial planning

Aging at home still has costs. A senior-focused financial planner can help map out what is realistic and what benefits may help.

4. Legal protections

Power of attorney, advance directives, and an updated will or trust protect you and your family if health changes happen suddenly.
