Real Stories: Downsizing Is More Than Moving

There comes a time in many people’s lives when they begin asking questions they never expected to face:

  • How do I resolve this?

  • Am I doing the right thing?

  • What is the right thing?

  • Who can help me?

  • Where will I go?

  • How is my life going to change?

When downsizing becomes a reality, the biggest mistake is thinking that downsizing simply means selling your house and moving somewhere smaller.

It is much more than that.

A successful downsizing transition can involve:

  • Determining the value of your home

  • Deciding whether and when to sell

  • Preparing the property for the market

  • Understanding the legal and financial aspects of the transaction

  • Sorting through years of possessions

  • Deciding what to keep, donate, sell, or discard

  • Determining where you will live next

There are also emotional decisions.

A home may represent decades of memories. Every room, piece of furniture, photograph, and personal possession can have a story attached to it. That is why downsizing should not be approached as something that has to be accomplished overnight.

It is a process — and having the right person guiding you through that process can make an enormous difference.

I learned this firsthand with Mike Flahaven.

Several years ago, I attended a number of Mike’s downsizing seminars. At the time, I was not ready to downsize. I attended because I wanted to understand what I might eventually face.

The seminars were informative and practical. Mike explained the different steps involved, what to expect, and the types of decisions people need to make. I kept his handouts and signed up for his emails.

At the time, I left thinking, “I’m glad I came.”

Years later, downsizing was no longer something I was preparing for.

It was happening to me.

That was when I discovered the real value of everything Mike had been teaching.

Meeting with Mike brought an overwhelming sense of relief and order to what could have been an overwhelming situation.

He helped me understand the many pieces that had to be addressed:

  • Getting an appraisal for my house

  • Determining how to sell it for the best possible price

  • Handling the legal considerations

  • Deciding what I wanted to keep

  • Deciding what could be donated

  • Deciding what I no longer needed

Then there was another major question:

Where was I going to live after I moved?

Mike helped with that too.

One of the most important lessons I learned is that downsizing does not have to mean making dozens of major decisions all at once. The process becomes much more manageable when you have someone who can help you organize the decisions, explain your options, and connect you with trusted professionals when needed.

That is one of Mike’s greatest strengths.

He is thorough, trustworthy, and extremely knowledgeable. He has developed contacts over many years of experience, and he is careful about the people he recommends. He background-checks those he uses in helping his clients and only recommends people who have earned his trust. Mike himself has background checks annually. To him, it is another level of trust.

Most importantly, there is no pressure.

Mike understands that everyone’s situation is different. Your timetable may not be his timetable — and that is exactly the way it should be.

He works around your schedule, listens to your concerns, and helps you move forward at a pace that makes sense for you.

Looking back, I am very glad I attended Mike’s seminars years ago. But I am even happier that when the time finally came, I knew who to call.

If you are beginning to think about downsizing — or you are already facing the decisions that come with it — you do not have to figure everything out by yourself.

Start with a conversation. Let Mike help you understand what comes next.

Peace of mind is a great thing.
