Tip Tuesday: Protect Yourself from Fake IRS & Social Security Calls
This months tip provided by: R.O.S.E. Resources/Outreach to Safeguard the Elderly
Getting an unexpected call claiming to be from the IRS or Social Security? Do not engage. Hang up immediately.
Real government agencies will not call out of the blue demanding gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, immediate payment, or personal information. Scammers often use fear and urgency to make people act before they have time to think.
Watch for phrases like:
“You will be arrested.”
“Your benefits will stop.”
“Pay today.”
“Do not tell anyone.”
“Verify your Social Security number.”
Mike’s Rule: Hang up. Look it up. Call back using the official website or phone number. Never use the number a caller gives you.
You can also consider removing your personal information from data broker websites to reduce how easily scammers find your name, address, phone number, age, and family connections online.
